Apple iPhone 6s to have 12 megapixel rear camera

IPhone cameras are undoubtedly one of the best smartphone cameras in the market but Apple's decision to stick with the 8 Megapixel sensor for the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus attracted a lot of flak from the fans. This doesn't mean the phones did not deliver on the camera quality. Even with half the pixels, the iPhones can easily contend with the top of the line smartphone cameras.

It seems Apple wanted to save the camera update for the next iteration, dubbed iPhone 6s. According to a post by IHS technology on the Chinese social networking site Weibo, the next iPhone will have a 12 megapixel sensor. This won't come as a surprise as one of the greatest limitation of using an 8 Megapixel sensor is its incapability of shooting 4K videos, which has become a staple for most flagships.

A lot of tech enthusiast and video bloggers refrain from using iPhones as their primary camera mainly due the lack of 4K shooting. If Apple is able to maintain the same optics with least changes other than the sensor it might end up being the best camera phone for pictures as well as videos. Samsung's Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge have managed to get on par with the iPhone in terms of point-and-shoot usage and if Apple wants to remain in the race it will have to accommodate a bigger sensor in the purported iPhone 6s.
